The D–REF Adult provides a rating of the behavioural, emotional, and cognitive symptoms of executive dysfunction in adults. It captures both the frequency of behaviours related to executive functioning and the symptoms that cause the most distress to the client and others.

Who is it for?

The D–REF Adult assists in the assessment of individuals suspected of having executive dysfunction due to conditions such as:

  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Cerebral vascular disease
  • Neurodegenerative disorders
  • Neuropsychiatric conditions

How it works

Clinicians can collect information from the client (Self Rating Form), someone familiar with the client (Collateral Rating Form), or both. Each form includes 58 items, rated as Seldom/Never, Monthly, Weekly, or Daily.

In addition, the D–REF Adult highlights the five most distressing symptoms identified by either the client or collateral rater. While the 58 items measure the frequency of symptoms, identifying the most distressing symptoms pinpoints the issues that create the greatest challenges, regardless of how often they occur.

The D–REF Adult provides:

  • An overall score for executive functioning
  • Three core indexes
    • Behavioural Executive Functioning
    • Emotional Executive Functioning
    • Cognitive Executive Functioning
  • Five clinical indexes
    • Attention/Working Memory
    • Activity Level/Impulse Control
    • Emotional Control/Anger Management
    • Abstract Thinking/Problem-Solving
    • Initiation/Apathy
  • Two validity indexes
    • Inconsistency
    • Infrequency
